Mt. Humphrey's

Most first-time parents are supposedly paranoid and overly cautious. Sometimes I think that Bruce and I are just clueless and unprepared! Bruce's parents invited us to go hiking this weekend... we thought it sounded like a great idea! So we got ourselves a child carrier and headed up to Flagstaff.

We camped overnight close to the trail head so that we could get an early start... we were thinking around sunrise (6:30 ish) well of course that turned into 9:00 ish... I kept changing Savannah's clothes because I wasn't quite sure what the temp was going to be like and since Bruce had done the packing I could chose between a onesie, pajamas, or a sundress... right before we left our campsite for the trailhead it had really warmed up so I settled on a onesie and lots of sunscreen with pajamas in the day pack.

On our way to the trailhead I found out that we were hiking to the highest point in Arizona... over 12,000 feet high and Bruce's parents had never made it to the top because of inclamate weather! Needless to say that when we got to the trailhead it was absolutely freezing! Since Bruce had done his own packing he only had t-shirt and shorts... I decided it was time to change Savannah's clothes AGAIN! So this time it was a onesie with her warm pajamas over the top and then her sun hat with her jacket over that. I feel so lucky that we had all of these things to wear.

Everyone on the trail commented on how tough Bruce was and what a good baby Savannah was. I was a very proud mommy and wife! I feel so lucky to have such a fun, strong, loving husband... and such a happy fun-loving baby! And also such fun in-laws to take us on great adventures (ready or not!) One man told us he thought that Savannah was probably the youngest person to ever do this hike. :)

This is the trailhead... we're ready to go and although we are cold we have NO idea what is in store for us... 9 miles and about 9 hours of difficult hiking with a five month old baby... even though it was hard I would do it all over again... we had so much fun!
Savannah was so much fun! This is what she looked like most of the day and she had way to much fun charming all of the other hikers! One group said they could even hear her singing behind them :)

Once we got to the "saddle" Savannah, Becca (Bruce's little sister), and I waited while Bruce and his parents went to the summit. We almost froze to death (I am quite certain :). When we got there I raced to give Savannah some rice cereal, change her diaper, and then nurse her. I was thinking since it was only two miles round trip and they had dumped us off they would be quick! Well about two hours later they came back for us and I nearly ran down the mountain to warmer temperatures. At some points during the day there were 40 mph winds at the saddle and 70 mph winds at the summit!! So were we crazy or what?

Last year on the day after thanksgiving we went with Derek's family to the Manti-LaSal Ntl Forest to find the perfect Christmas trees. Joshua was 4 1/2 months and it was so cold that after a few minutes I seriously couldn't feel my toes... and I was hiking around.I was sure Joshua would get frostbite and his nose would fall off or something. We only lasted 20 minutes or so before I went back to the car and nursed Joshua, thinking this is just what those poor people and their children who get stuck in blizzards do just to stay alive... except I had done it voluntarily.
